When Your Struggles Start to Feel Like You

Are you struggling with something right now?

Maybe you’re anxious about something at work. Maybe you and your spouse have been fighting more than you used to. Maybe one of your kids is having a hard time, and it’s wearing you down. Maybe you’ve lost someone, or you just feel disconnected from people in a way you can’t shake.

Whatever it is, here’s what I notice in my office. When we struggle long enough, the struggle starts to feel like us.

How To Get Out Of Fight Or Flight When You Are Stuck

Most days, somewhere in the middle of everything, I hit a moment of panic. Not the debilitating kind. It’s more of a “what am I going to do” panic, and when it shows up, part of me wants to check out and go find something fun instead. There’s a real pull to drive home and get back in bed, or just go for a drive and get away from all of it.

Have you ever felt that? Or maybe it runs the other direction for you. Maybe you feel an intense urge to fix the thing right now, so strong it makes you dive in hard and get aggressive about it.

Finding Rest When You Feel Overwhelmed and Weary

Life has a way of becoming overwhelming without us even realizing how heavy things have gotten.

Responsibilities stack up. Expectations grow. Things take longer than they should. And before you know it, you’re mentally exhausted, emotionally drained, and spiritually worn down. If that’s where you are right now, you are not alone. Even counselors feel this way. I feel this way. Working with clients, juggling family, and managing the stress of daily life. None of us are exempt from it.

Where Was God in My Trauma? Finding Faith When the Pain Doesn’t Make Sense

Trauma doesn’t just wound the body or mind. It can rattle the very foundations of what we believe. Many survivors quietly carry spiritual confusion right alongside their emotional pain. Some walk away from faith entirely. If that’s where you are, I’m not here to lecture you. I’m here to sit with you in it. And when you are ready, I will help you try to make sense of the pain and confusion so that you can get back to enjoying your life and living it well.

How Negative Thinking Affects Your Life, Health, and Relationships

I remember sitting in class—probably around third grade—and seeing that quote plastered on a poster. I read it almost daily and tried to understand what it meant. My third-grade brain couldn’t fully grasp the idea of a “mindset.” But later in life, I got it.

The way you think impacts the way you live, and sometimes the direction your life takes. Every day, your mind has countless opportunities to focus on what’s good, what’s hard, what’s threatening, what’s hopeful, or what’s possible. And what you focus on tends to become a pattern. Patterns shape choices. Choices shape behaviors. And behaviors shape outcomes.

How to Support a Loved One Who Is in Therapy

When someone you love decides to start therapy, it can be both encouraging and intimidating. You care about this person, so you are probably proud of them for taking this huge step and happy to see them prioritizing healing and growth. You may also feel intimidated or uncertain about how to best support your friend … Read more

What We Learned From Hurricane Helene: A reminder of how fragile and important life really is

Hurricane Helene. What we learned. Hurricane clouds. How to deal with stress.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many are still grappling with its impact. Sadly, it’s often only after we lose something that we realize how fortunate we are. Millions lost power, and many in rural areas were left without water because they relied on electric wells. Gas became scarce as stations lost power, and food spoiled quickly with refrigerators and freezers out of commission. Only the most prepared among us escaped with minimal impact. Who would have thought a chainsaw would be an essential item for preparedness? We may not be laughing at those “preppers” anymore.

Inside Out 2: Three takeaways for developing healthier emotions and lifestyle.

A Brain showing different colors for different areas and the title discussing Inside Out 2 and takeaways to help with emotions and lifestyle.

The other evening I finally had the chance to go see Inside Out 2, which recently came out in movie theaters. It has been on my to-watch list since I saw its previews. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the first one (Inside Out). I was blown away after watching the second one! After the credits rolled I looked over to my husband and told him we needed to talk about this movie in the car because of how much they did well.
